LONG-TERM
IMPLICATIONS OF IMPROPER GARDENING TECHNIQUES
CHIROPRACTORS - BACK CARE SPECIALISTS
Chiropractors
have long recognized that strenuous physical activity like raking, hoeing, lifting,
digging, and planting associated with gardening and yard work is good exercise,
but can be a hazard to your spinal health. These activities can lead to injury
if performed incorrectly or for a prolonged period of time.
Improper gardening techniques can:
cause
repetitive strain injuries of the waist and elbow
lead to
degenerative joint and disk problems and herniated disks in the lower back
cause
sprain/strain injuries to muscles throughout the body, but especially those in
the lower back muscles
cause
wear and tear on joints and muscles
lead to
re-occurring or chronic pain, decreased quality of life and independence
Here are some things you can do if your back and muscles are sore after
spending time in the garden or yard:
Sit down and put your feet up
Try applying a cold pack to your muscle pain,
(once an hour for 10 to 15 minutes), during the first 48 hours, or a heat pack
after 48 hours have passed. Wrap the pack in cloth to protect your skin
Liniments or a gentle massage can provide
temporary relief
If
pain persists, talk to a chiropractor. Chiropractic care is a highly skilled
manual treatment carried out by trained professionals. Chiropractors play an
important role in providing preventive education and early detection of spinal
problems, as well as providing care for back pain and muscle injuries. If you
experience severe chest pain call your local hospital emergency department and
see a physician immediately.
